My Week at John C Campbell Folkschool 2016

I had the most fabulous time teaching a group of students how to make a modern quilt at the John C. Campbell Folkschool last week. We used my Charming Chevrons pattern and it was so fun to see all of the variations!

charming_chevrons_class

I had a wonderful group of 8 students who made 9 quilts in 5 days!!

The Folkschool has been around since 1925, offering classes on dozens of different arts and crafts disciplines. For a week long class, students arrive on Sunday and get settled in, then work for 5 days straight in 6 hours of classes per day, with breaks for yummy meals 3 times a day!

My students started cutting and sewing on Monday, and by the time of the student presentation on Friday afternoon, every single one of them had a finished quilt top, two had completely finished quilts, and most of the rest of them had their quilts basted and ready to finish at home.

Gerry_Basting

Gerry smooths out her quilt after it has been spray basted, while Fran is ironing one of two charity quilts she was able to complete during class. Check out those mountain views!!

I taught a similar class last year, using my Modern Logs pattern. This year I encouraged the students to work at their own pace, and several of them took advantage of open sewing time in the evening to get a little more done. We covered all aspects of making a quilt: cutting, piecing, basting, machine quilting and binding.

Pam_Modern_logs

Pam Howard is the resident Weaver at the Folkschool. She took my modern logs class last year and brought back her completed quilt! Her Charming Chevrons blocks are on the wall behind her.

It was so fun to see the students’ faces light up when they realized that yes, they can make an entire quilt on their home sewing machines!!

Susan_quilting

Susan was so excited to quilt her chevron quilt in class! Each student had their own table and design wall – plenty of space in which to work! That’s Barb’s top hanging on the wall.

Each students’ quilts were so unique. Whether it was their first quilt, or they had been quilting for decades, all had fun and created a beautiful work of art!

Lucy_quilting

First-time-quilter Lucy quilted an easy wavy plaid design with her walking foot. I brought along copies of my machine quilting books so students hand plenty of designs from which to choose!

While I was teaching quilting, my husband Jason took a photography class. In fact, he told me he hopes I teach there on a regular basis, so he can take a class each time I teach.

jason_folkschool

Jason poses beside the welcome sign on the first day of class.

The good news is, I’ll be back again in the summer of 2018. (My 2017 teaching calendar was already full.) We haven’t set an exact date yet, but I’m thinking sometime in June would be great.

jason_photography

One of the landscape pictures Jason took during his photography class. The folkschool is nestled in the mountains and the views are just spectacular!

Each Folkschool instructor has their own specialty, and I love that mine is teaching how to make a complete quilt from start to finish, while emphasizing the modern aesthetic.  I’ll repeat this format in 2018, albeit with a different pattern. Several of the students have already said they plan to come again, so it will be a fun reunion!!

Craftsy Review – Pre-Cut Shortcuts Class by Amy Smart

My talented friend Amy Smart (from Diary of a Quilter)  just released her first Craftsy class and it’s right up my alley! It’s called Pre-Cut Shortcuts: Quilt Tops in Less Time.

From now until June 9th, you can get 50% off using this link, available only from me!

titleCard_10652

As you may or may not know, I am a huge fan of precuts and run The Precut Store with my husband, Jason. In fact, we stock many of the precuts shown in the class!!

Amy’s class is chock full of information as she walks you through how to make several different patterns from precuts. In addition to the Q&A sidebar and easy to follow class materials, a new feature to this class includes animated illustrations.

For each pattern, Amy does a voiceover of the steps she’s going to perform while images move around the screen showing what the final layout will look like. Then she hops on the machine and shows each step of the process. It’s a great way to learn!

Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 11.56.55 AM

My personal favorite quilt from the class is the Gumball Quilt which is hanging behind her in the picture above. Watching this one come together was so fun to see. I picked up a few tips that I’m definitely going to incorporate in my piecing from now on!

10652_Set_Stills_04_10652

The camera angles in the class are fantastic – you can really see what she’s doing!

The Basket Weave Quilt in Progress – No you don’t have to cut any little pieces!!

Amy cleverly starts with precuts, sews them into units which are then cut up into other units, using shortcuts like disappearing blocks and strip piecing. In fact, after viewing this class, there are several quilts I want to make!

Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 11.54.52 AM

I really liked the Crosshatch quilt Amy made using the Valley Collection by Sheri and Chelsi for Moda. In fact, I recently made a quilt from these fabrics, and they are in stock now!

Pre-cut Shortcuts is broken down into a total of 6 segments, of about 15-20 minutes each. It’s the prefect length to watch a segment and get a little sewing done at the same time! And the last section of the class is worth the entire price of the class!

Amy walks you through step by step how to bind your quilts. It’s very similar to the way I bind mine, but she throws in a a few speedy tricks which I’ve never seen before and definitely plan to incorporate going forward.

Check out that yummy Elizabeth Hartman Pacific rollup! We have it at The Precut Store!

Amy also includes tips on working with multiple precuts and how to measure them or deal with inconsistencies between different precuts.

I’ve known Amy for several years now and can truly say she’s a cheerleader for fast and fun quilting. She’s also a great teacher with a very calming voice that you can listen to for hours on end.

I am excited to be teaching 2 classes on EQ7, 3 classes on domestic machine quilting, plus a lecture. Here’s my schedule, in order:

(220) Getting Started with EQ7 – Thursday 2/23 9-5

introtoEQ7

In this comprehensive workshop, students will learn the basics of Electric Quilt Software – version 7 for Windows or Mac. Topics include: learning to use the block library, setting blocks into quilt layouts, adding borders, importing fabric swatches, designing simple quilts, calculating yardage and more. This is a hands-on computer class, and students must be comfortable using their own laptops, with their version of the software installed and validated prior to class.

(826) Machine quilting Spirals and Swirls – Thursday 2/23 6-9 PM

center_spiral

Learn how to quilt modern, geometric spirals and swirls using both walking foot and free-motion motifs. Students will learn how to quilt stunning designs such as large continuous spirals, geometric spirals, and several swirl variations. Spirals can be quilted in different areas of your quilts, or used as an allover design. Combine motifs for even more possibilities! Students should be comfortable with basic machine quilting techniques.

(LE08) Quilting on Your Home Sewing Machine: Tips and Tricks – Friday 2/24 10:30-11:15 AM (lecture)

trunk_show

There are quite a few differences between quilting on a long arm and quilting on a sit-down home sewing machine. Although many of the same motifs can be quilted on either machine, the techniques on how to approach the quilting are different. In this lecture, I will share her best tricks on how to approach quilting on a sit-down machine. Plus, I’ll answer your questions and share tips on how to become a better quilter.

(223) Designing Modern Quilts in EQ7 – Saturday 2/25 6-9 PM

Designing-Modern-Quilts-in-EQ7-Image

Take your modern designs to the next level by learning how to draw and change them in EQ7. Topics will include drawing improv blocks, manipulating borders, incorporating negative space, going off the grid, changing sizes, and designing custom set quilts. We will work at a quick pace, so students should be comfortable with the basics of EQ7 prior to class. This is a hands-on computer workshop, and students must be comfortable using their own laptops, with their version of the software installed and validated prior to class.

(817) Free Motion Alternatives to STraight Line Quilting – Sunday 2/26 9-12

fmq_straight_line_alternatives

Go beyond the straight line and use your free-motion quilting skills to their fullest. In this workshop, students will learn how to turn basic shapes into linear free-motion quilting designs. Quilt them as allover designs across the surface of your quilt, or use them sporadically to create custom quilting motifs. Students should be comfortable with basic machine quilting techniques.

(833) Improv Machine Quilting – Sunday 2/26 2-5

improv_machine_quilting_image

Liberate yourself from traditional quilting symmetry by combining your favorite machine quilting motifs in a seemingly random way. Add amazing texture to the negative spaces in your quilts and create your own unique combinations. The class will cover basic free-motion filler designs such as pebbles, swirls, leaves, paisleys, triangles, and more. Learn how to improvisationally combine them for stunning results. Students should be comfortable with basic machine quilting techniques.

The rest of the time, I’ll be walking the show floor, checking out the quilts, and of course trying to meet as many of you! Let me know if you are planning to attend.

Craftsy Class Review: Next Steps with Your Walking Foot

I was so excited to get the opportunity to review Jacquie Gering’s new Craftsy Class: Next Steps with your Walking Foot. This is a followup class to her earlier class, Creative Quilting with Your Walking Foot, which I previously reviewed here

title

Although Next Steps with your Walking Foot is meant to follow the earlier class and Jacquie references it quite a bit, I think there’s so much good information in this class that it can stand on its own, even if you haven’t taken the first class yet.

The entire class runs for approximately 3 hours, and I had a great time watching it, coincidentally while doing my own walking-foot quilting for an upcoming quilt along!

decorative_stitching

Decorative stitches are so quick and easy to do – here’s my current WIP using them!

The class is broken down into 8 segments running anywhere from 15 minutes to 30 minutes in length. I love watching a video this way because there are plenty of good stopping points. Jacquie is very thorough in this class, including many supplemental class materials which are a  handy reference as you are going through the class.

Twigs

Twigs – one of the designs Jacquie teaches using reverse quilting. So clever!

Here are the basics of what you will learn in Next Steps with your Walking Foot including what I enjoyed most about each section:

  • Lesson 1 – Walking Foot Basics
Jacquie explains the anatomy of a walking foot along with how you can adjust your foot to work best for you. IDF (integrated dual feed) works basically the same as a walking foot. This is what I use on my BERNINA and I like that she affirms that what I’m doing is correct!
  • Lesson 2 – New Linear Designs
Jacquie goes beyond straight line quilting by adding decorative elements to her straight lines to “fancy” them up a bit. It’s all about the amazing texture!
  • Lesson 3 – Decorative Stitches
Jacquie explores many of the decorative stitches built into her machine. She also keeps a stitch journal with detailed notes on which stitches to use and what the settings are. I thought it was very clever of her to use something as simple as a blind hem stitch in a new way!
  • Lesson 4 – Concentric Shapes
This was my favorite lesson of all! I loved learning Jacquie’s trick for quilting concentric geometric shapes by traveling in the ditch. I already have several great ideas brewing for how to incorporate these ideas into my quilts!
  • Lesson 5 – Spirals
She shares her magic formula for marking guidelines when quilting geometric spirals like squares and octagons. She also shows how mistakes can often turn into happy accidents!
  • Lesson 6 – Designs with Reverse Stitching
Jacquie shows how to combine reverse stitching with regular stitching for some really unique quilting effects. I have played around a bit with this myself and it was great to get validation that yes, this is an okay thing to do!
  • Lesson 7 – New Curved Designs
With a bit of marking and planning, she shows how to come up with some really cool curved effects, building off of ideas she has taught in her previous class. Although I’m not one to mark much, this section gave me some ideas to branch off from. 🙂
  • Lesson 8 – Curved Remixes
Clamshells, flowers, and circles, oh my! By the time you get to the last lesson you will be blown away by the sheer number of ideas of how to quilt with your walking foot!

spirals

I love Jacquie’s approach to teaching geometric spirals – it make so much sense!

Special Discount – Just for You!

For a limited time, my friends at Craftsy are allowing me to share this class with you at up to 50% off the regular price. It expires in exactly one week, at the end of the day on March, 30, 2016 so if you are thinking about it, don’t wait – enroll now. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did. 🙂

QuiltCon 2016 – Modern Quilting is About More than Just Quilts

I returned from QuiltCon yesterday and it was such an amazing experience. As I begin to process everything, the thing that sticks out most in my mind is the community aspect of it all. In fact, for today’s post, I won’t even be talking about the quilts. But don’t worry, I’ll get to them later. 🙂

lunch_onthe_steps

Lunch on the Steps with Melissa – pictured are Melissa Averinos, Molli Sparkles, Lacy J. Law, Becca Bryan, Violet Craft, Monica-Solario Snow and another gal in the upper left whom I met but sadly forgot her name (if you are out there new friend – please speak up!)

It’s been stated that the modern movement is part attitude/part aesthetic. The modern quilting community itself is a huge part of that! QuiltCon is unlike any show I’ve ever been to and it’s so unique in that you really feel like you are among friends. It’s so fun to meet up with instagram/facebook friends in person and have longer, more in-depth face to face conversations. I think we all love being a part of something and being around others who get it.

panel_fabricstash

One of the fun things I got to do was take part in a panel discussion on how to stash our fabric. The moderator was Rossie Hutchinson and panelists were myself, Mary Fons and Judy Gauthier. I was able to give Mary a big hug and thank her for giving me my first “big break” in the quilting community (when she selected my Charming Chevrons quilt for the cover of Quilty magazine back in 2013). Chatting with her before the panel began felt like we were old friends catching up.

I love being part of both the local and national MQG community. So many of my local Las Vegas MQG members attended, since the show was only a few hours drive. I didn’t realize what a huge help they would be in helping me set up and break down my classes each day.

lvmqg_roadies

My “roadies” – Melissa B., Ida, Melissa C. and Vicki with our guild’s group entry.

One of my favorite moments at the show was meeting up with Angela Walters and Jennifer Keltner (Chief Visionary Officer for Martingale/That Patchwork Place) for a little chat about our book, The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting which releases in April. We have something extra special planned for Spring Quilt Market in May and I can’t wait!

christa_jennifer_angela

And finally I love, love, love, my community of students. Teaching is one of my favorite parts of my career as a quilter. That spark of excitement on a student’s face when they get it is one of the huge reasons I do what I do!

student_fmq

Student work from my class “free-motion favorites for the modern quilter.”

I taught two machine quilting classes while at QuiltCon along with two classes on EQ7. I’m always a little unsure of how the material will be received and it makes my day when a student comes up to me at the end of class and tells me how happy they are with what they’ve learned. Yay! That kind of positive feedback propels me to do more. I love it!

EQ7class

It makes me happy to see students chatting together before class begins.

And the best news is, for anyone who was unable to attend QuiltCon 2016 – I’ll be teaching again at QuiltCon in 2017, this time in Savannah, Georgia. I can hardly wait!

Craftsy Class Review – Disappearing Blocks with Precuts

My friend Angela Pingel recently released her first Craftsy Class and I just love it! It’s called Simple to Stunning: Disappearing Blocks with Pre-cuts.

titleCard

You all know I’m a huge fan of working with precuts, so this class is right up my alley! You’ve heard of disappearing 9 patch blocks right? Angela’s class explores that concept in great detail with many other starter blocks besides the simple nine patch.

The class runs just over 100 minutes so it’s a little on the shorter side compared to some of the other Craftsy classes, but it was the perfect length of time for me. I often get excited about a new class, then lose a little steam and don’t make it through the entire thing. Well, that didn’t happen with Angela’s class. She had me engaged from start to finish!

watching

I watched Angela’s class while working on a secret quilting project. So fun!!

Here’s a breakdown of the six lessons that are included in the class:

  1. Precuts and Disappearing Blocks – Angela introduces you to a variety of pre-cuts. You’ll also get started on your first block and practice cutting and sub-cutting techniques.
  2. Disappearing Blocks with Charms – Create three beautiful blocks: a disappearing nine-patch, a disappearing four-patch and a disappearing diagonal four-patch.
  3. Disappearing Blocks with 10 Inch Squares – Cut triangles, then find out how to sew gorgeous pinwheels and hourglass blocks that look complex but come together quickly.
  4. Disappearing Blocks with Rolls – Learn Angela’s method for accurate strip-piecing as you make a disappearing strips block and a disappearing strip triangles design.
  5. Double Disappearing Blocks – Learn how the addition of more fabric and cutting can transform 5″ squares into incredible, dimensional nine-patch and whirligig blocks.
  6. Designing Your Own Blocks – Angela shows you how to turn your new skills into inspiration for future projects and how to customize pre-cut color palettes.

Here are just  three of the fun blocks that Angela shows you how to make in class:

DisappearingStripTriangles_1

Disappearing Strip Triangles

DisappearingStripDiamonds_1

DisappearingFourPatchBlock_1

Disappearing 4-Patch Block

During each teaching session, Angela includes illustrations of what each block would look like when set into an entire quilt. There are some pretty cool combinations that I’m itching to try!

Just like each and every Craftsy class, there are additional class materials to use when making your own blocks, plus tons of teacher support. You can ask questions during class and Angela is very prompt about answering. One of my favorite things in any class is reading through the comments during each lesson. I highly recommend this class and will definitely watch it again!

Quilting a King on Your Home Machine – Video Workshop by Leah Day

Leah Day’s blog, The Free Motion Quilting Project was one of the first blogs I began to follow when I found the wonderful community of online quilting back in 2012. Since then, we’ve gotten to know each other better and were able to meet up at spring quilt market earlier this year for some yummy food and great conversation about quilting!

leah_christaLeah Day is an amazing quilter and one heck of a business woman, too! This is us a quilt market.

Leah has wealth of knowledge about machine quilting on your home machine which she shares on her blog and through her online store with a vast array of machine quilting videos for you to explore and purchase. I love her “can-do” attitude, along with her spunky tell-it-like-it-is personality. 🙂

Today I want to tell you about one of Leah’s newest video series, Quilting a King on a Home Machine. It’s an in-depth workshop of 20 videos along with a complete pattern for Salsa Verde – a very stunning quilt! Leah’s class walks you step-by-step through the entire process of making a king size quilt.

salsa verdeSalsa Verde quilt design by Leah Day 108″ x 108″ – Isn’t it stunning?

Leah’s instructions and diagrams are very clear and easy to understand, and her videos are very well done. The pattern portion of the workshop shows you how to assemble the Salsa Verde quilt, and then the video portion takes you through the steps to get it all quilted. Along with the class, you also have access to Leah though her facebook group at Leah Day Quilting – so you can get 24/7 support whenever you need it!

The entire video series runs for approximately 3 hours, and it’s nicely divided into bite size chunks that you can watch at your convenience.

basting king sized quiltTip – baste your quilts well when you are getting ready to machine quilt.

Here’s a listing of the video topics, for Quilting a King on your Home Machine:

  1. Introduction
  2. Basting a King Sized Quilt
  3. Machine and Table Setup
  4. Walking Foot Basics
  5. Managing the Quilt Bulk
  6. Free Motion Quilting Basics
  7. Practice Free Motion Quilting
  8. How to Quilt Square Spiral
  9. How to Quilt Zig-Zag Path
  10. How to Quilt Polka Dot
  11. How to Quilt Wobbly Cosmos
  12. How to Quilt Echo Shell
  13. Marking the Quilt and Planning the Quilting Path
  14. Starting in the Center
  15. Quilting the Inner Spaces
  16. Marking the Inner Border
  17. Quilting Lines in the Inner Border
  18. Quilting Polka Dot Parade in the Inner Border
  19. Quilting the Pieced Border
  20. Quilting the Outer Border

As you can see from the list above, Leah really breaks the process down into manageable steps. You know what they say – how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. We can now change that to, how do you quilt a large quilt? One stitch at a time!

quilting a king home machineYes, you can, quilt a king sized quilt on your home sewing machine!

I think my favorite thing about this video series is that Leah shows you how to use both walking foot quilting and free motion quilting in the same quilt for excellent results. I also love the fact that she shows you how to quilt large quilts on your home machine. Here’s an introduction to the video series, from Leah herself:

I always, always, recommend taking courses from as many different quilting instructors as you can, even when they are teaching the same material. Although many of us instructors may overlap on similar subjects, we all have our own approach to teaching and present things in a different way. You never know when something someone says is really going to resonate with you. And the best part is, many of us are friends and love to support each others’ work. After all, the more people we can encourage to machine quilt on their own machines, the more vibrant the quilting industry will continue to be. 🙂

mqx_teacherproduct buttonLeah was recently awarded MQX Machine Quilting Teacher of the year, which just goes to show, she really knows her stuff!

I think Leah is super smart to take advantage of teaching online, and it allows her to reach a larger audience while still maintaining her young family.

Be sure to check out Leah’s class Quilting a King on a Home Machine. You’ll have access to the videos at any time and you can work on this beautiful quilt at your own pace. You’ll be glad you did!
