The End of an Era – Plus a Giveaway

By now I’m sure many of you have heard the news that the National Quilting Association (NQA) is ceasing operations. This came as such a sad surprise to many of us who had been longtime members. The organization just celebrated it’s 46th year and a huge turning point in my quilting career was getting the opportunity to write a regular magazine column for them about Machine Quilting, and getting to teach at their last quilt show earlier this year. The reasons for their dissolution are given here.

nqa_magazineThe last issue of Quilting Quarterly

As a side note, I hope I’m not a bad-luck charm. The last magazine I wrote for on a regular basis was Quilty, and it went defunct, too! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for better luck in the future!

At the time I wrote what I consider to be my best article to date (co-authored with the super amazing Jacquie Gering), I didn’t realize it would be in the final issue of the magazine. I don’t think the publishers and editors knew that either. In fact, I had one more column slated for the next issue which won’t end up being published. However, I’ll  be sure to share it with you all at a future date.

I always like to find a silver lining among the gloomy clouds, so the good news for you guys is that I have one extra copy of the issue I can pass along to one lucky winner. I’m sure this will become a collector’s item since it’s the last issue.

To enter this giveaway, just leave a comment letting me know what’s your favorite quilting magazine and why. I’ll choose a winner at the end of the day on Friday and will share the winner’s name here in this post. I’m happy to ship it to anyone, no matter where in the world you live!

If you click directly on the title of this post, there should be a comment box below this post for you to write in. Otherwise, click the # of comments show, above the post in the left margin to leave your comment.

Right now I am enjoying the Quilting Newsletter. I am Leary of subscriptions to niche magazines for this reason. It is hard to buy. Subscription when many magazines are going out of business. Let’s all go to the newsstands and support our magazines!

I loved Quilty, so it was a sad day when I heard it was no longer going to be published. My current favourites are Love Patchwork and Quilting and Modern Patchwork.

I have to admit that I don’t subscribe to any quilting magazines. Those that catch my eye in thrift stores and used book stores are what are affordable for me. But I love when I find a Quilting Arts. Just the beauty that can be made with fabric and thread makes me want to continue to learn to be more than a beginner.

Quilter’s Newsletter and Quilting Arts are my two favorites. QN because I actually might make a quilt from it and QA because they show new ways to change your fabric and/or manipulate it..

my favourite magazine WAS quilty. how long did they even run for? it had just the right blend of whimsical and fun to it, and all in a more modern way. perhaps we’ll have to start our own magazine. however, if they couldn’t make it work financially, how can i ever hope to make it work in canada??? i suppose everything is online nowadays and not enough people buy real magazines.

i always buy the quilt sampler edition from better homes and gardens because then i go through the exercise of evaluating each store and seeing how i would set up a shop. that has always been my dream. that is published twice a year.

i do love quiltmania, BUT the most annoying thing about that one is that all the dates are way past by the time you get the current magazine. for instance, i just picked one up 2 days ago and all the show dates and contests are for end of september and october 3 and 4, nothing later. so that is useless.

so if you’re giving away a magazine, i’d love to win it!

My favorite was Quilty. I loved how beginner friendly it was. I was sorry when it closed down. Now I am liking Simply Moderne.

My favorite magazine is Quilters Newsletter, however I subscribe to several other quilting magazines. My house is overrun with old issues. I have been quilting for 35 years.

For the past several years, my favorite has been Quiltmaker Magazine. It offers patterns and projects for a variety of skill levels, so as I have progressed from being an absolute beginner to an almost-intermediate quilter, that magazine has continued to meet my needs.

Not all of your wonderful mags are available here in South Africa but I grab anything I can get hold of. I must definitely look out for Machine Quilting as this is my absolute passion. I’d love to be the lucky one to win your mag!! Thanks for the chance Christa.

I think my favorite quilting magazine is American Patchwork and Quilting. I’ve subscribed to lots of other magazines off and on, but that’s the one subscription I always renew. I also enjoy Love Patchwork & Quilting and have subscribed since it began, though it’s pricey for U.S. residents!

This is very sad news for all of us. NQA set the standards and the expectations for excellence that we take for granted today. I am sure we will feel the reverberations for years to come. Crista, you embody that excellence and I look forward to your next successful affiliation.

My favorite magazine is AQ (American Quilter). I love the fact they show so many quilt winners from around the world. They really inspire me to do my best, usually show me how to make one of them, and offer some of the most beautiful quilt fabrics at a good members price. They show big and little quilts, vintage and modern patterns. I can dream about winning sometime in the future.

Quilters Newsletter is my favorite magazine. I like that it focuses more on quilters and quilting culture and less on pattern after pattern.

My favorite is Machine Quilting Unlimited. Although it is aimed at longarmers, I find many helpful hints in here and learn many new patterns for fills. I’d love to see an article on how to choose the right fills in the open spaces.

Ahh this is the end of an era…..I would have to say that my 3 go to books are First-
American patchwork quilting and then Second would be Quilting Arts and somewhere in between would be Modern Quilts. I know you only asked for one but these are the ones I look for all the time so I have to give them equal bidding…
I would love to read this magazine and your article in it.

We get a smattering of titles here down the bottom of the globe, my favourite of these being Quiltmania. I haven’t found their new title QuiltModerne though.

I love a lot of them and would love to read this issue! Quilt Now is the one I hunt down to purchase, so I guess it is my favorite! I loved Quilty and was saddened by it stopping. I enjoy modern trends and new fabric lines and notions. I read them cover to cover always something to learn from others!

I just started learning to quilt this year. So I am not familiar with all the magazines. However I do subscribe to Quilters World and really like it. I also just bought your book ” Machine Quilting with style”, and love it 🙂

My favorite quilt magazine is Quilty, but I pick up magazines like candy when on a road trip, so have many others I like.
