Thanks to all of you for your kind words and good wishes on my Spiraling out of Control quilt. As I said previously, no matter how the competition turned out, I was happy to be a part of the challenge and thrilled that someone would think my quilt deserved to be among the top 10 out of hundreds. Besides, now I have a finished quilt ready for the next show!

Spiraling out of Control by Christa Watson
As I’ve said before, I absolutely love entering challenges and competitions, even if I don’t win. It helps me become a better quilter, and it allows me to share my quilts with a wider audience. Besides, if I didn’t have deadlines to strive for, I wouldn’t get anything done, LOL!
A couple hours after I read the final MQG challenge results, I got a notification from AQS that my Colorful Chevrons Quilt has been juried into Paducah. That made my day!

I absolutely love your quilt! I thought you were going to place in Top 3 for sure – but congrats on the Top Ten; that’s still pretty fantabulous!
How exciting to have your chevrons in Paducah! Are you going to be attending? I attended in 2012 – my first time at any quilt show at all – a pretty good introduction as it turned out ; )
I thought for sure you would be one of the winners! Your quilt was amazing. Glad to hear, though, that your other quilt made it into the Paducah event. Congratulations 🙂
Sorry that you were not among the top 3, but it is still a fabulously insipiring quilt! The chevron quilt is gorgeous also.
Sorry you didn’t take the top spot like I was sure you would but it’s only one panel of judge’s opinions. I hope you keep it in circulation and enter it again elsewhere when the opportunity presents itself again. You go girl. I personally love the quilt you made it has so much movement and is interesting to look at. Congrats on Paducah.
Thanks so much! It was the MQG who narrowed down the choices and then the fabric company who selected the final winners – so I’m still thrilled that the “gurus” of modern quilting liked my quilt enough to choose it as a finalist. I’ve just filled out paperwork to enter Spiraling into a couple more shows, so we’ll see what happens!

Getting into the top 10 of 390 is HUGE. I personally think that the judges maybe are not ready for modern quilts that push the boundaries a little? All 3 winners have light backgrounds, 2 white, one pale grey. I’ve been thinking of using black as the background for a modern quilt myself–why not? I think yours had tons of movement, and I also liked the fact that you incorporated improv piecing, and did it very effectively.
I was hoping you’d be in the top three — your quilt is so dynamic yet balanced. You have a great attitude, and the Colorful Chevrons going to Paducah is fantastic!
Good attitude! Being in the top ten is AWESOME! And getting accepted at Paducah on top of that! You have arrived! And you deserve it. Your quilts are wonderful.
I was amazed by your Riley Blake challenge quilt when you first posted it. What creative use of the fabrics! I had wished that I could start mine all over I was so inspired by Sprialing Out of Control! I was sure you would be selected as a winner – I think all 10 should be.
I agree – they were all so great!! Now onto the next challenge!

I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your colorful chevrons quilt!!!! Loved it on the cover of QUILTY magazine and that’s why I purchased that issue. After I read about it, that’s when I started following your blog….and my life is richer because of that. I have made two chevron quilts myself (before my encounter with yours)…..and soooooo love your Riley Blake entry SPIRALING OUT OF CONTROL. Your work is inspirational.

Even being selected to be in the contest was a win, Christa! So congratulations on that. Similarly, being juried into Paducah is a *huge* win — whether you come home with or without a ribbon. Congratulations all over again! 🙂
Your quilt is awesome. I really like your design and the name you gave your challenge quilt. I showed my husband a picture on line and he really liked it; in fact, he made comments about why he liked it. He is usually a man of few words but he used more than a few when expressing his opinion about Spiraling Out of Control. We both love it.

The photo of the quilt is beautiful, but I didn’t have a full appreciation of the work until I received the scraps left from the quilt. The skinny strips, vibrant colors, and sharp points were amazing.
Love your designs, you have a great eye for color! And now, fun with solids! 🙂

All the quilts in the top 10 were really great–however, I thought yours would for sure be in the top 3! I was banking on it! So I am a bit disappointed that you weren’t! 😦 Congrats on your other quilt! Good luck! 🙂

You are an inspiration to all, especially struggling newbies. Loved your use of color and you had so much piecing compared to the first two winners. I also loved Melissa Corry’s quilt but the other two,, not as much as yours.

Congratulations about Paducah! I must say I was really surprised your challenge quilt wasnt in the top 3!! I am crazy about it! It really makes your eyes dance to look at it..it definitely was my favorite! I wouldnt want to be the person to make that decision…there were so many interesting and awesome entries.
