It’s time for another giveaway! As with all of the giveaways I’m hosting during my Abacus Quilt Along, you do not have to follow along to participate in the giveaway. Everyone is welcome to comment and enter for a chance to win.
Beautiful Aurifil threads I used in my version of Abacus.
Up for grabs this week: A bundle of beautiful 50 weight Aurifil cotton threads! One lucky winner will receive 8 small spools of the same exact colors I used for the machine applique on Abacus; plus a large spool of the same grey I used for the machine quilting.
Click here for a listing of the exact colors of threads and fabrics I chose.
Machine quilting is my favorite part of making any quilt – it’s quick, easy, and fun!
To enter, simply leave a comment letting me know what you think about machine applique! Do you love it or hate it? Or are you somewhere in between? You can also mention your favorite method of applique if you like. 🙂
Good luck!

I really like the look of needle turn as opposed to machine applique and enjoy handwork but time constraints usually force me to refer to the machine applique method. I do like the option of satin stitch or decorative stitch to change it up a bit and add character to the project.
I’ve just started trying to to applique and so far I love everyone elses but not mine yet. Hopefully I will get better! I wanted to try so bad and I keep seeing so many neat projects. Thanks for the giveaway!

Seems like I am doing more of it lately. I really have only done raw edge, but it is not my favorite. Someday I will get brave and try something different.
Machine applique is just fine when I am in a bit of a rush or a quilt is going to be laundered frequently but I much prefer the slow stitching of hand applique. It is so relaxing and portable.
I tried applique several years ago on a sweatshirt and didn’t care for it. Would love to have the thread.
I have not yet tried it, but I’m always for learning new things. I love the different colors you have to pick from. What a wonderfull experience just to know how to quilt.
I’ve never attempted machine applique. I’ve tried needle turned applique, though, and I can’t honestly say that I enjoyed it, although I generally really like hand stitching. For example, I love English paper piecing.
It scares me!
I really do love appliqué! I haven’t tried it with Aurifil, I bet it lays smoother 🙂
I am not against it, but I rarely use it. But when I see your quilt, I like to try it again. 😉
Greetings, Rike
Thanks for a wonderful Aurfil giveaway. I haven’t tried appliqué yet as I am scared to even try it.
I love all aspects of machine appliqué, whether raw edge, satin stitch or decorative stitches. It’s all just fun
I used to machine applique fun stuff on the front of my son’s little shirts. I have never tried it on a quilt. I prefer freezer paper applique with hand stitching. I am soon going to try needleturn and backbasting applique techniques to see if I like either of them better.
I like machine applique, but I aspire to needle-turn applique.
I love the efficiency of machine appliqué, but it is not as socially friendly as hand appliqué … Where one can sit, sew and chat.
Just learning to applique, but it’s definitely machine applique not hand. Same goes for quilting, machine all the way.
I like machine applique. Those threads are wonderful. Nancy P.
I would love to win that beautiful Aurifil!!! Thanks for the chance. I love to machine applique.
I have a love hate relationship with machine applique! I love how much easier it is for me to do but I usually don’t like how it looks when I’m finished!
I have not tried machine applique, but at a retreat one of the members had some machine applique that had such a fine stitch it looked almost as invisible as hand applique. I was impressed. Don’t think I’ll try it so long as my only sewing machine is my Featherweight, though.
I haven’t done any applique so far, it’s on my to do list.
I am somewhere in between…fine with the walking foot but get anxiety and headaches from free motion. My favourite applique is wool on whatever….no fuss.
Haven’t given it a try yet.
I have only done appliqué a few times. So I need more practice before I get comfortable with it.
So far I have been too scared to try it!
I’ve only done a couple of projects of machine applique, the latest on a T-shirt quilt. Although more time consuming, I appreciate and enjoy doing hand applique. I would love more Aurifil!
This look like a fun project. I can see it will take a great deal of time. If people only knew the hours spent quilting
I am just getting into Machine applique and so far so good… I still enjoy needle turned applique but might soon be a big fan of Machine applique… Just have to wait and see how things turn out.
I love the quilt you made with these blocks! Personally, I think machine appliqué looks fantastic when it’s done well. It’s definitely a skill that I need to add to my repertoire.
Hi! LOVE the abacus quilt! I haven’t done any applique yet… but I like the looks of it all! Thanks for the chance to win!
I love satin stitch machine applique. To reduce the bulk of the fusible, I draw my pattern onto the paper backed fusible web and trim away the middle leaving about a 1/4″ from the drawn line. Would love the aurifil thread. Oh, and machine quilting is my least favorite part of the quilting process.
Love machine applique and so much fun with pretty colors of thread…
I have never tried it on a quilt but I did several small projects in the 1990’s. It is definitely something I want to do again. Thanks.
I have always done needle turn applique. Just took a machine applique class. I’d like to be proficient with machine applique. Need to practice! I would love to win some Aurifil. Thank you.
I haven’t tried machine applique yet. I enjoy handwork and love needle turn applique. Thank you!
Still learning but so far I like it
I love freezer paper, whether by machine or hand. I’ve always had a difficult time with needle turn, and I don’t really care for fusible, although I haven’t experienced a wide variety of the newer types.
I love both machine applique and hand applique….it just depends on the project!
I love machine applique and using aurifil thread are a wonderful combination.
I’ve just started, but soooooo excited to jump into this new world!
Personally, I prefer freezer wrap applique. I am just not a fan of fused applique.
I’ve never tried machine applique, at least not yet. I have done needle turn applique and like it.
I have only tried a couple of times – so I am a nervous quilter/applicator. Would love to win the threads and give it another go!
I love machine appliqueing…I have just started doing it, but I’m enjoying it.
I like machine applique. There’s something relaxing about listening to the sewing machines as it makes the perfect little blanket stitches.
Wonderful collection of neat threads.
I like it
I love that machine applique makes things so easy!
I like machine applique on something otherwise it is needle turn applique.
I haven’t tried it yet, so I don’t have an opinion one way or another. But I would love to try!
