Beautiful Aurifil threads I used in my version of Abacus.
Up for grabs this week: A bundle of beautiful 50 weight Aurifil cotton threads! One lucky winner will receive 8 small spools of the same exact colors I used for the machine applique on Abacus; plus a large spool of the same grey I used for the machine quilting.
Click here for a listing of the exact colors of threads and fabrics I chose.
Machine quilting is my favorite part of making any quilt – it’s quick, easy, and fun!
To enter, simply leave a comment letting me know what you think about machine applique! Do you love it or hate it? Or are you somewhere in between? You can also mention your favorite method of applique if you like. 🙂
Good luck!

I haven’t done much appliqué…but wanting to start since seeing your quilt and Playful Petals book
I love applique but I know my limitations. I just haven’t mastered machine applique. I will hand, needle turn if I need to applique, but I usually avoid it all together. I am a get it done now kind of quilter so I can move on to the next project.
Machine applique over hand applique! Aurofil is a wonderful, light, easy to use thread for any quilting and stitching! Beautiful colors! Thank you for sharing!
I really like raw edge machine applique.
I’ve been experimenting with lots of kinds of applique in the last year, mostly by machine. Turning the edges over an interfacing was the easiest and using a washable glue stick to hold the fabric in place – Sharon Schamber’s method.
i love machine applique and experimenting with all the techniques for doing it.
I’ve enjoyed machine appliqué but I have to admit I like piecing better. Thanks for the chance to win.
I’ve never tried appliqué, but I’d like to 🙂
It always surprises me the beautiful colors thread comes in! I’ve done some appliqué and really enjoyed it. I have tried the freezer paper method and raw edges, both methods I like equally!
When I do appliqué, it is machine sewn every time.
I like machine applique, and finding the right thread color is important to me.
I prefer machine applique. Much quicker
I prefer machine applique. Much quicker
I do both machine and hand applique. It depends on the effect I’m looking for.
i am half way through hand appliquéing a quilt for my daughter ( my first try). Next time I am definitely going to machine appliqué- this is taking forever.
And I love the colours you chose!
I love it can’t live without it!!! I could go into embroidery withdrawal. When I meet my maker I want to bring all my embroidery stuff with me!
I’m too lazy for any other version! Machine all the way!!
I haven’t done much machine applique, but when I did I used a zig-zag stitch. I have a newer machine now and it has a button hole stitch. So I hope to use it to applique a big flower on a baby quilt.
I love machine applique – all the beautiful results of applique in less time than doing it by hand. Thanks for the chance to win Christa, and thanks for your inspiring blog!
I’m a beginner in applique but I love it and i’m trying to learn all methods.
I love both hand and machine appliqué. And I love aurifil thread!
I have tried many types of applique. I really don’t have a favorite. All the thread colors are just lovely.
im not ready to do appliqué yet. I’m a new quilter. Love the colors.
I like machine appliqué. I use my machine’s blanket stitch to secure the shapes and I really enjoy the process. I’ve switched to Aurifil thread for all my quilting and I love it!
I am a newbie! I am going to give machine appliqué a try!
Love to machine applique, especially now that my eyesight isn’t as good as it used to be. Hand work is difficult these days.
I think it looks great when it’s well done, although I understand why some people do it by hand. My thought it: if you’re machine piecing, and machine quilting, why not machine appliqué? Alas, it is a skill I have yet to master.
I prefer the slow hand applique method. But I have done it by machine too.
I love all appliqué . These colors of thread are beautiful!
I try it all! Sometimes the shape will dictate the type of appliqué to do.
Machine applique? I love it! Hand applique is great too, but sometimes a quality machine does such a super job.
I prefer to do hand applique.
I have done machine applique. But have always loved the look of hand applique.
I love appliqué. Machine or hand. It depends on the project. I use the blanket stitch on my machine. Sometime with matching color thread and sometimes with contrasting. Depends on the look I want.
I prefer hand applique because I haven’t found a fusible product that I like yet. They all seem to leave things feeling too stiff for my liking. I also don’t have a machine that has a blanket stitch and the zig zag is “iffy” on it. 🙂
I love to do machine applique. I like to fuse the applique down, then machine applique around the edges of the applique piece. I also hand appliques sometimes, but the machine work is easier on the hands.
I am doing mostly machine applique on my sewing machine. crystalbluern at onlineok dot com
i do mostly machine appliqué so i must love it…also love aurifil thread…
I much prefer it to hand applique. So much quicker!
Love it
Like machine appliqué. Easier for me than hand appliqué due to arthritis.
Love the way machine appliqué just “pops” the appliqué pieces right off the quilt! So pretty!
I love machine applique. It is so easy and quick to do.
I recently machine appliquéd airplanes and stars on a child’s quilt. Small pieces such as eyes raveled around the edges. Larger pieces such as airplane bodies were not a problem. How would you deal with the small pieces?
Love it! I’m still new to appliqué-ing so it’s all so amazing to see how it’s done!!
I love machine applique. I do a little 1,1 buttonhole.. It leaves beautiful neat edges. My project s finished quickly and I have the joy of a finished project. Aurifil Thread is the icing on the cake to a beautiful finish.
I LOVE Aurifil thread! !
I have only done hand applique and I enjoy it. I can’t wait to try machine applique with this qal though!! Seems like it will be much quicker! 😀
I’ve never tried appliqué at all, machine or by hand! I would like to give it a try though.
I am just getting introduced to both hand and machine applique. I am loving it and hope to get more involved with it.
I prefer the looks of hand applique but believe machine applique is more durable on children’s clothing and their quilts.
