It’s time for another giveaway! As with all of the giveaways I’m hosting during my Abacus Quilt Along, you do not have to follow along to participate in the giveaway. Everyone is welcome to comment and enter for a chance to win.
Beautiful Aurifil threads I used in my version of Abacus.
Up for grabs this week: A bundle of beautiful 50 weight Aurifil cotton threads! One lucky winner will receive 8 small spools of the same exact colors I used for the machine applique on Abacus; plus a large spool of the same grey I used for the machine quilting.
Click here for a listing of the exact colors of threads and fabrics I chose.
Machine quilting is my favorite part of making any quilt – it’s quick, easy, and fun!
To enter, simply leave a comment letting me know what you think about machine applique! Do you love it or hate it? Or are you somewhere in between? You can also mention your favorite method of applique if you like. 🙂
Good luck!
Buttonhole machine applique is my go to applique!
I’ve never tried machine applique before….i like fusible applique since it’s easy!:)
I need to practice more, but I like it! Thanks for a chance to win 😉
I am just entering the world of appliqué! I don’t know what I prefer yet! I like to machine stitch it so it feels more permanent but then hand stitch it because I love love love how it looks!
I love patterns with applique, but I don’t particularly enjoy the way my machine does applique stitching. It’s a 20-year old machine, so perhaps there have been some improvements over the years – it’s a Viking 550, very deluxe in the day!
Hi Barb – Do you get your machine serviced? Have you adjusted your tension? What stitch do you want to sew with. For satin stitch, you want your stitch length to be about .30 – .40 – (can you see the decimal before the 3?) and your width whatever you want. If you are using blanket stitch, which I find very useful, then I find length at 1.6 and width at 2. Your machine is sophisticated enough to sew these stitches nicely. I suggest using a bobbin thread in the bobbin and a 40 weight thread on top. Not any bigger or use Aurafil and have it in both top and bottom and then tension should be alright.

I am just learning Hand Applique now…but have done some easy Machine Applique & loooved it…have a few Christmas gifts I plan to make using Machine applique…way quicker & fun too! 🙂
Not a fan of doing appliqué. I like the look, hate the process. I do have a new machine and could be willing to give it a try sometime.
Do you use Aurifil for piecing and quilting your quilt?
Yes! It’s my favorite!
I have never tried it! But it is something that is on my quilty bucket list!
I haven’t done much applique- but what I have tried has only been on my machine. I don’t have the patience yet for hand sewing much! This is a technique I want to learn more about… someday! Thanks for the chance to win– love those colors!
Late to the party here, but I’m going to start this project to try machine applique AND learn to use my machine better. Thought this would be a good project to do that. Thanks!
Love to machine applique. It adds so much to quilting and gives it life.
I like machine applique – second only to fusible applique!! I can quilt the dickens out of them and they aren’t going anywhere!
whats NOT to love!?
Love applique; don’t like to do it. If I am going to do it, machine is the only way it’s going to get done.
I have not done any machine applique yet, but I need to! There are so many shapes to add to quilts in this way.
For me it depends on the project whether hand or machine applique is the choice.
I have used machine applique the most because I can hide a lot of flaws under the appliques and the stitches are always perfect and even…especially with Aurifil Threads.
Trying to do machine appliqué at moment, trying both over papers and heat n bond, thanks for competition jenny
Love machine appliqué! I used to do most of my stitching by hand but now I love machine blanket stitch (very relaxing) and machine quilting.
I have been unsuccessful at machine applique.
I’ve done some machine applique. I’ve got a long way to go before I’d say I’m good at it, but I do like it.
I haven’t tried applique yet, but I suspect I will be using my sewing machine when I do!
Machine applique is the only way to go!
I like machine appliqué a lot.
I am somewhere in the middle of machine applique. While I do love the look in quilts, it is not my most used quilting technique.
I’m with Carole, I have to gain some courage, so much into hand work it’s difficult!
I would love to learn how to do machine appliqué, but haven’t taken the time to take a class. Any suggestions on classes for beginners. Thanks for the opportunity to win Aurifil thread — I use Aurifil for all my sewing.
Just finished a quilt done entirely with raw edge machine applique – and I am very happy with how it came out. Would love to try Aurifil threads for my next project.
i love machine applique, and actually, I’m working on a big project now. Aurifil thread is perfect for applique…. and many other techniques. Thanks for the chance to win!
Thanks for the opportunity…I hope it’s me that wins. Machine applique is definitely not in my wheel house. I am in awe at those that are good at it.
I like machine appliqué, but would love to do it by hand. Love the abacus quilt!
Still a beginner-so I’ll need lots of beautiful Aurifil thread to learn how to machine appliqué!
I love the look of machine appliqué!! I especially like it when the appliqué doesn’t look to perfect, like little squiggles going around and around!! Thank you!!
Love machine applique~ it is the only way I would ever applique because otherwise I’d give up! LOL Thanks for the fun!
I have trouble with ALL sorts of applique, probably because I havent sat down and read instructions and tutorials carefully so I just kinda.. overstitch the heck out of stuff! Thank you for the giveaway, my goal this year is to learn skills WELL so it’s on my list 🙂
I love machine applique especially when you have beautiful threads to compliment what you are stitching. Your combination of fabric and threads are gorgeous.
Ready to try my hand at machine applique.
I have used Arufil for years. Lovely clean thread with. we colors coming out the time. A spool lasts forever it seems..
I’ve only tried machine applique a few times and really enjoy it!
i prefer machine appliqué, but also enjoy a little needle turn by hand. Many ideas and things to try! Would love to win the beautiful aurifil thread!
I have not done very much machine appliqué, I usually do it by hand.
I really enjoy machine appliqué. Sometimes I use satin stitch and sometimes I use blanket stitch aka buttonhole stitch. The choice depends on what I want to convey. I’d lobe to use the Abacus colors in appliqué! thank you.
I can only machine appliqué but am not bragging on that. Would love to win the thread.
I am still on the ‘applique” fence, but the only way would be machine applique or I would just be creating UFO’s… Thank you – the thread bundle looks fabulous!
I have been doing machine applique for more years than I will admit. I have to say that my new embroidery machine does a better job than I have ever done!
Not good at machine quilting but will improve as I practice! Love doing appliqué!
I enjoy machine appliqué. Thanks for the great giveaway.
I’m beginning to really like Aurafil. These are beautiful. I would love to win them.
LOVE machine applique 🙂 In fact I am working on a quilt using all machine applique right now!
