abacus_aurifil_threadBeautiful Aurifil threads I used in my version of Abacus.

Up for grabs this week: A bundle of beautiful 50 weight Aurifil cotton threads! One lucky winner will receive 8 small spools of the same exact colors I used for the machine applique on Abacus; plus a large spool of the same grey I used for the machine quilting.

Click here for a listing of the exact colors of threads and fabrics I chose.

Machine quilting is my favorite part of making any quilt – it’s quick, easy, and fun!

To enter, simply leave a comment letting me know what you think about machine applique! Do you love it or hate it? Or are you somewhere in between? You can also mention your favorite method of applique if you like. 🙂

Good luck!

If I’m doing applique, it’s definitely going to be machine applique! Thanks for the chance… finally tried Aurifil thread and love it. Great colors!

I love doing applique! My favorite method is machine blanket stitch with matching thread….or depending on the design, sometimes I do it with black thread.

Not a huge fan of machine applique. I always thought it looked old fashioned, but I’m starting to change my mind as I see quilts like yours.

I have done a lot of machine applique and use the blanket stitch to finish it. It is okay occasionally, but I prefer sewing quilt tops without applique. Thanks for the opportunity to win the thread.

I enjoy machine applique. As the project I have done are usually not overly large it gives me an opportunity to do machine quilting. I find following the outlines or quilting in a small area less intimidating. Thanks for the chance.

I happen to love machine applique, not only for quilts, but use it to make some beautiful sweatshirts for myself, which I wear for Spring, Fall, Halloween, Christmas and just for fun. This is actually how I started to use applique and then started using it on quilts, especially for our great granddaughters who just love receiving quilts with appliques of things they have a special affinity for, such as, Mickie and Minnie Mouse, cupcakes, ice cream cones, elephants and so on. Thank you for the giveaway opportunity.

As long as all the pieces have nice curved edges, I find machine applique very relaxing. Anything with a point makes me crazy! I guess that means I just need more practice….just like machine quilting. Practice, practice, practice to make it perfect.

I had done some machine applique for block of the month, but I am nervous about using it again on a quilt that is actually going to be used and washed. When I got my first king-sized quilt back from a longarm quilter, in one of the appliqued areas the fabric had been pulled away from a small section of the tightly zigzagged edge. I repaired it by hand, but now I am unlikely to use this technique for anything but wall hangings, etc.

I’m a needle turn appliqué person at heart. I will use machine appliqué occasionally but would rather afford the time to hand appliqué. Thanks for the awesome giveaway! Aurifil thread is the best!

I’ve done a bit of machine appliqué – my quilt group is currently working on a challenge where we all make the same snowman wall hanging and seeing how we all add our own personal touches to it – they should be fun to see! Thanks for the chance to win a give away!

I am still figuring machine appliqué out — I’ve done hand work but I really need to practice my machine appliqué technique. Thanks for the chance to win Aurifil thread. I love working with it.

I have done machine appliqués and hand appliqués and can’t say I prefer one over the other. It depends on the project and my time constraint. Thanks for the great giveaway.

I used to avoid applique projects at all costs! Then I did a small block project for my local quilting guild and realized it isn’t hard at all. I love the idea of doing it by hand, but I’m not there yet. I’m happy doing it on my machine!
Thanks for the chance to win those beautiful threads!

for me, it depends on the project. Often machine applique gives me the look I want and of course it is faster, but other times I like the look of hand applique. In one of the comments, I read about a starch method, sounds interesting so I will be researching. I love the way you have threads in the exact colormatching to the fabric; something I don’t always find easy to do. thanks

I’ve only dabbled with applique but it is something I want to learn to do well. Aurifil threads are beautiful! I love all the colors!

I tried machine appliqué for the first time yesterday. I kind of like it, I’ve only been practising so far so I can work out the right stitch length, width and tension. I think I’ll like it a lot when I have those things worked out and can get on with the project I have planned. I’d better get back to it actually, it needs to be finished in 8 days!

I’ve done appliqué but I have so much else that I feel that needs to be done that it has taken a back burner, way back in the back, of my list of things to do. FMQ on the other hand is creeping closer to the front burner and the Aurifil threads are at the top of my list to use! Thanks for the opportunity!

I’m a fan of machine applique IF the edges are turned under. I like the starch method with a tiny stitch to sew it down. My ‘go to’ thread is Aurifil…love it!

I have seen many beautiful quilts made with machine applique, but I have not done it myself. Having a very basic machine may be part of that–I might be more tempted to try it if my machine had a blanket stitch! So far, I’ve pretty much stayed away from any kind of applique.

I love the flexibility of appliques. They add so much to the character of the piece. I find that using a bit of Misty fuse to hold them in place to then be sewn with a blanket stitch works the best. My last piece with applique was done in wool with cotton thread.

Love all types of applique! Machine applique is my fave during warm months of the year….when it’s cold and dark in the evenings, I love to sit by a fire and hand stitch.
Thank you for your blog, and for a giveaway! 🙂

I have done both machine applique and hand applique… There is an obvious time factor and final design effect and that is what is the deciding factor for me!!
