So I have three huge projects releasing this year. #1 is my third book which comes out next month. #2 is a new thing I’ve never done before which will be shown at fall market (sorry for the tease!), and #3 is my second Craftsy class which goes live next week – Startup Library: Quilting.
To say it’s been a busy year is a bit of an understatement, but now that most of the work has been done comes the fun part – I get to tell you all about it!
In class, I’ll teach you how to make the colorful Friendship Stars quilt from start to finish!
Startup Library: Quilting is different from the first class I released earlier this year (The Quilter’s Path) and it’s much more in-depth. Whereas the first class focused on machine quilting and included a free quilt pattern for you to make on your own, Startup Library: Quilting takes you step-by-step through the entire process of making a quilt, while working your way through the colorful Friendship Star quilt that I designed above. It also includes the free pattern plus bonus machine quilting diagrams.
The class is geared toward those who are just discovering quilt-making for the first time, or for other crafters who are adept in their own hobby, but want to give quilting a try.
I love sharing tips and tricks that make piecing easier and more fun!
I was really excited to teach this class because I often lament the fact that I can’t teach everything in a one-day quilting workshop! This class covers all the basics: cutting, piecing, basting, quilting and binding in an in-depth set of 14 lessons.
Although aimed at beginners, I think it’s a great resource for more experienced quilters who want to freshen up their binding skills, or learn how to baste and prevent puckers while quilting! Plus I’ve thrown in tons of tips throughout the class including how and why I starch my fabrics, how to cut and piece efficiently, and many more.
The pattern to make the quilt is included in the class!
When I filmed my first class, the number one feedback I got was how nice it was that students could actually watch me manipulate a “real” quilt under the machine. Well in this class, you’ll get to watch me perform every step of the process, on an even larger quilt! I compare it to watching someone cook rather than simply reading a recipe – you’ll be able to learn all the little tricks that I do, that I don’t even realize I’m doing!!
The class includes all the finishing steps – basting, quilting and binding.

I need more help with machine quilting on my domestic machine. I love the piecing and quilt making aspects of sewing, just wish I could do my own machine quilting.
Hello Christa – I’m a machine quilter want-to-be and now have my new machine. I have had quite a bit of experience sewing and hand piecing and quilting but need refreshers on how to do the same with the machine. I envision machine quilting way more satisfying and quicker than hand quilting.

I need to get better at deciding what patterns to quilt. I’ve gotten pretty good at feathers and they’re fast but now I’m bored with them and need to learn more patterns. Congrats on your new class!
Need more practice with…. i have found that that’s it..just keep practicing practicing practicing… but binding corners are still the ones that don’t get enough practice.
The part I need the most help with is putting the quilt sandwich together & quilting the quilt.

I am comfortable with sewing the top but when it comes to sandwiching the top, batting and backing …..not so much. Then where to start. The middle or the corner or where? A quilt is such a big project to give up on that I would like to be confident in finishing what I start..
I am always looking for ways to tweak my FMQ – This is the area that I have the least confidence in. Thanks so much for sharing. This looks like an awesome class.
Christa, love all your quilts. I have many placesI need help with. Getting points to come out correctly is a must.
I need to get over my fear of ruining a quilt top and just try FMQ. I use my walking foot for quilting most of my quilts, but some of the tops I’ve made just deserve more.
I am a beginner and am still struggling with consistent 1/4-inch seams and I have trouble putting the backing, batting and top together so it is nice and flat for quilting. I have not done any quilting by machine other than stitch in the ditch.
Aye, where to begin? Although I’ve been a quilter for years – I always feel “quilt-challenged”, haha. I believe the first “key decision” is the color selection. After that, proceeding is ok until (ta-dah) I have to determine the best design(s) for quilting… and then actually make them happen! I took your class at VQF and loved it – absolutely wonderful and very empowering! However, I’m very anxious to put tips, techniques and theory to the test – and have a finished quilt! 😉

First, I love Craftsy Classes. Also, even though I am not actually a beginner, I feel that I can always learn something new. I am open to learning ways and tips to help my quilting to be better.
I need to learn how to reduce bulk in seams that meet. Also, cutting tips especially when dealing with large pieces of fabric.
The machine quilting is the hardest part for me. I have lots of tops to finish. I have been a reader of your blog since it started.
It’s never too late to pick up techniques from other people. Ensuring that cutting is accurate is probably at the top of the list. Can’t wait for your new class.
I took your first class and quilted my first quilt. However I need more practice doing FMQ. I enjoy learning new things and I watch a lot of videos to pick up tips and shortcuts!

I just need the confidence to think I can quilt it. Not long ago I purchased your first class. After watching it I decided to quilt a lap size quilt. I used your wavy line technique going both directions across the quilt. I must admit I was pleased with the results. Would love to win your new class

I still struggle with what types of motifs to quilt on my finished tops.
I love that quilt ! It’s not a regular type quilt you make, but it’s mine ! I think I am a pretty experienced quilter but the sew on binding is something I need help with, I am great at hand sewing the edges over. I’m sure anything you teach will be great.

Quilting on a domestic machine
While I understand the importance of a scant quarter inch seam allowance, I still have trouble getting blocks with multiple seams to come out the right size. I’d like to know more about your starching technique and, like many other respondents, I have trouble figuring out what motifs to quilt and how to fill odd shapes.
I’m new to quilting, so everything! But especially quilting and binding.

I would love to learn the best way to spray baste a quilt top. Also selecting a FMQ design to compliment the quilt top pattern. Congrats on your new adventures.
