Are you following along with The Splendid Sampler? If you haven’t heard of it yet, it’s the most epic, “sew-lebrity” filled sew along (of all time), consisting of 100+ free block patterns, designed by 83 pattern designers, shared twice week, for an entire year!!!

Just a few of the 80+ Splendid Sampler designers at Spring Quilt Market 2016.
For those of you making blocks either physically with the group (or virtually in your head), the 50th block releases this week! Isn’t that exciting?? Although I’m not going to spoil tomorrow’s surprise, the designer of block #50 is Joanna Figueroa of Figtree Quilts. I’ve seen the block, and let me tell you – it is Splendid!!

My Splendid Block
You may recall my block, Scrappy Happy Heart, below, which was released back in May. Click here to learn more about my block! It’s been exciting watching so many people making my paper pieced block design and sharing their work. The biggest comment I’ve seen on Instagram (#scrappyhappyheart) and in the Splendid Sampler Facebook group is that my block is the perfect block for those who have never paper-pieced before and want to try out an easy block. That warms my heart!!

My Scrappy Happy Heart Block
To celebrate The Splendid Sampler halfway point, hosts Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson are teaming up with many of the Splendid Sampler designers with bonus blocks, fun giveaways, free patterns, and maybe even a little “behind the scenes” of the project.

Free Pattern for Splendid Friends
For anyone new to my blog, I invite you to get this free PDF quilt pattern of my Puzzle Box design just for stopping by and signing up for my email newsletter.

But wait…. there’s more!!

Book Giveaway for Splendid quilters
I’m also giving away a copy of the brand new collaboration book, 180 Doodle Quilting Designs. This book was compiled by Martingale/That Patchwork Place, the same folks who will be publishing The Splendid Sampler book once the blocks are all complete! (They have also published both of my quilting books, so I might just be a little bit biased!!)

180 Doodle Quilting features designs from several talented friends, including Splendid Sampler designers Melissa Corry, April Rosenthal, and yours truly! Perhaps this book will help you decide how you want to quilt your blocks when they are all finished!
For your chance to win, just leave a comment below letting me know if you’ve ever participated in a block of the month/week/day type program before. If so, tell me what you loved about it!
This contest is open to everyone worldwide. I’ll pick one US winner who will win a physical copy signed by me, and one international winner who will receive an e-copy.
The contest will close Aug 15th and I’ll ship it to you by the end of the month. Thanks for stopping by!!
I love BOM’s! I especially love opening my mailbox with a package full of fabric and pattern. Just like receiving a present in the mail. It helps motivate me to complete the quilt. I try to hammer it out to get ready for the next block! Thanks for offering this giveaway.
This is my first time to participate in a BOM.
I am having so much fun and learning lots of new techniques that I would have never tried if I hadn’t participated! And I love following along with Alyssa, she has helped me tremendously!
BTW, the book looks great!
Hugs,
Gina
Oh yes and I loved the opportunity to sew different blocks each month. Thanks for fabulous giveaway.
This is my first time doing blocks of the month/week. I can’t believe how much I have learned since this sampler started. I had never done paper piecing until this sampler. I have fallen in love with it. I think it is the most favorite thing I have learned. I just love the way my blocks come out perfect! Thank you so much!
Hi Christa!
Thank you for your wonderful scrappy heart block. As a beginner PPer, is was the perfect design for me to play and create rainbows! I’ve never done a BOM or quit along before, however if the SS community is anything like other sewing groups, well, count me in!
I have participated in several BOM/quiltalongs. I like it best when the pace is reasonable and I choose my own fabrics. They are a great way to use scraps and learn something new, too.
We do a BOM at my quilt guild. I like trying out a new block or color combination that I might not have tried otherwise.
I have done BOM two years now and monthly block at the local quilt shop in Rochester, IL. It keeps me focused to get the blocks done each month when I know a new one is coming at a specified time. I have never done paper piecing so am excited to try it, your scrappy heart block will be a good one for me to learn with. I am hoping it is similar to working with a pattern to make a dress. The Doodle book looks great I would love to have it.
I joined Pat Sloan’s facebook page last year so yes I have participated in a block of the month sew along. Loved your heart block.
I love BOM / BOW programs. Just love the variety and the ability to work on something over a period of time
Hi Christa what a wonderful prize. Yes I have done a BOM actually a few because what I get out of them is friendships I have built, the chance to see the bom in many different colors, opinions on how some are quilting which all teach you to maybe go out of your comfort zone and stretch. So in many ways I think they are a great teaching tool. sgriff57(at)comcast(dot) net.
I have been doing monthly quilt along at the local quilt store in Rochester,Il for the past three years, it has been so much fun it keeps you focused to keep up each month with the block presented. Then I am always anxious to put it all together and get it quilted. I am excited to do your block as I have never done paper piecing before in quilting, I keep thinking it may be similar to sewing up a dress from a pattern which I have done multiple times as a young girls years ago. I would love the doodle book.
I love BOM projects, especially samplers. I’m a relatively new quilter and they help so much with learning new skills and practicing rusty ones.
I have participated in two BOM’s on Craftsy.com. They were 12″ blocks, so not nearly as challenging as some of our SS blocks have been. Learning new things and enjoying the ride.
I am currently doing Pat Sloan’s Secret Garden BOM. I finished the Craftsy 2016 BOM in June. I like doing sampler type quilts so that I get a lot of variety in the blocks and learn more.
Have been following your blog for a while. Love the splendid sampler and all the different blocks. Trying to make lap quilts for a memory care unit here in Henderson NV. Look for simple, quick patterns.
this is a first for me. I have never participated in a sew along. I have just started the RowbyRow Experience as well. I am loving the Splendid Sampler! I loved your block as it made me not afraid of paper piecing! Thank you so much! I sew something everyday. Sewing has been therapy to me since I recovered from cancer 4 years ago.
Participated before??? I never even quilted before! I am loving this journey and experience! I will not be my last!!!
I have participated in several BOMs. I would love to have the Doodle Designs book. Thanks for all your sharing.
I haven’t participated in any block of the month or a quilt along. I am having fun learning so many new things.
I have done a few different ones and have designed a couple for my guild.
This is my first sew along. I have never participated in anything like this. I LOVE IT! It has encouraged me to reach out and try new things. I have also joined the ROWbyROW experience as well. I sew something everyday. I feel this is keeping my mind going!!! Sewing has been therapy to me since recovering from cancer 4 years ago. thank you for your contribution. Your block made me unafraid of paper piecing!!!
Quilt alongs are addictive… i’m participating on 2 right now……. LOVE them.. they encourage you to work on them…but allow you to work at own speed… and time.. but getting it done is part of the challenge…. and they send parts at a time.. so not looking at BIG picture…
I have participated in a couple bom programs. I like being able to do a bit at a time.
I have participated in a couple BOM’s. I usually find it hard to keep up, but I always finish the quilt.
I am participating in the farmer’s wife quilt along. I like being surprised each week as to what block I have to make. I’m enjoying splendid sampler even more for the variety of blocks and the surprises!
Yes, I enjoyed the deadline of a BOM! Makes me get’erdone.
This is my first time participating in a BOM. I love the surprise every time a new pattern posts. Sometimes I’m excited and other times not so much. lol. I have rediscovered my love for hand embroidery through this 50 block journey. I am reminded of how bad I am at applique and how much practice I need. And I am reminded of how frustrating paper piecing can be. However, I loved your heart block and jumped right on that one. Above all, I am learning new skills and patience and love the comraderie of the group.
I have done several BOMs before, mostly at my local quilt shops. My favorite thing is getting to make different blocks every month – that way I never get bored making a tone of the same block! 🙂
This is my first quilt along or group quilting extravaganza… Previously I did simple trip around the world baby quilts, all squares. This has been a fun excursion!
I have never done a BOM like this but I’m loving it. I like the variety of all the splendid blocks!!
Thanks so much for your book giveaway! I love BOM’s and this Splendid 2-BOWs because having the blocks to make pushes me to get them done. This one is especially fun because it’s international.
I have not participated in this type of BOM. I have so many quilt projects going on at a time that I find I just can’t keep up with BOM’s. Some day I will be retired from full time work and can spend my time really focusing on skillbuilding. I’ve had my eye on the “doodle” book since it was introduced. Looks like a great book!
I LOVE BOMs- I am currently doing the splendid sampler and 3 others- I only do the ones that are free online. Id love the doodle fmq book – it looks great!
I always participate in my guild”s bom because I never want to be left out on a great project!
I love the Splendid Sampler and your scrappy heart. I made 3. I participated in one other block of the month. I like learning new techniques or better ways to do them with each block. Thank you for your creativity.
Oh yes! Sort of addicted to them! The variety of blocks is inspiring and a great way to see fabrics your will never own!
I have participated in several BOM before and like the way you get a gentle reminder each month to work on your project, especially important when life gets in the way. I am enjoying handwork more and more as I appreciate it’s calming qualities. I enjoy learning new things and gently pushing my boundaries. Thanks for the opportunity and for everything you do.
The splendid sampler is my first ever BOM. I’m thrilled to be part of this journey. I am also involved in Pat’s My Secret Garden BOM and if that isn’t enough…I’m doing the threaded journey with Wendy Shepphard. Next year I need a BOM on machine quilting – I’ll have plenty of tops by then – ha ha ha 🙂
I love the Splendid Sampler and your heart. I made 3 of them. And I taught my friend paper piecing with it. I’ve only participated in one other block of the month. I like learning new techniques with each block. Thank you for your creativity.
My guild did a BOM a few years ago to celebrate 25 years. Every block had 25 pieces.,I made a batik set and a gray, red, and white set. It was fun to see how I could put them together in such different color ways, and settings. I enjoyed making your block for Splendid Sampler!
I have participated in numerous BOMs over the years. I love learning new ways to do something, especially one block or row at a time.
I have participated in a Block of the Month before, several times. I love having something to look forward to each month and it’s not overwhelming…just a little at a time. The Splendid
Sampler has been so fun. I get caught up and then before I know it I am behind again. I have learned so much with this quilt! Many blocks have made me step WAY out of my box and I love that.
Yes I have participated in a block a week (mystery) and block of the month. I love learning new techniques and the mystery element, both fun, thanks!
Love paper piecing and loved your block. It is one of the 19 that I have made so far. It’s a great block for introducing someone to paper piecing so I am going to share the pattern with friends.
I am participating in the Splendid Sampler, just finished block 49 yesterday, working on today’s bonus block
Hi – yes I have participated in a block of the month at a local quilt shop. Loved the idea of having a completed quilt at the end of a few months plus getting to meet new people who love to quilt. I started to participate in this sampler once I saw Pat Sloan was a host – I have done several of her quilts from patterns and books – so I knew I had to do this one. Your block was a great paper-piecing block since I had never done paper-piecing before. Thanks to you and all the other designers for such an amazing adventure – just seeing interpretations from around the world. Thanks also for a nice giveaway – love to doodle.
I have participated BOM for a few years started with Craftsy BOM 2012 and a BOM program runs by a local quilt shop-Atlanta Sewing and Quilting. I really enjoy doing Block of the Month which I learned tones of skills from doing that. The book “180 Doodle Quilting Designs” would benefit me greatly because I quilt each quilt on my home sewing machine, more importantly, I enjoy doing free motion quilting! I have your book of Machine Quilting with Style, it gave me lots of inspiration in designing my own quilting designs. I also follow you on Twitter and Instagram.

I have never done a BOM or sew a long before. I love it as there are so many different types of block types.
