Piece and Quilt with Precuts Quilt 8: Windows

There are just a few more quilts to share before I’ve finished showing you all of the designs from Piece and Quilt with Precuts. Today, take a look at Windows, made from Tula Pink True Colors:

Windows from Piece and Quilt with Precuts by Christa WatsonWindows Photography courtesy of Martingale/That Patchwork Place and Brent Kane

Piece It

Windows is made from 2 1/2″ strips, 1 1/2″ strips and a lot of background fabric. It uses fewer 2 1/2″ strips, so here’s where a smaller bundle of your favorite prints can be used effectively. And of course it will look dramatically different just by changing up the fabrics. As long as you have a strong contrast between the window frames and the background, you’ll have success with this design!

I always have a hard time naming my quilts and thought of several possibilities for this one. If you rotate the quilt, the blocks look like elevator doors. You could even use the same two fabrics in each block to look like equal signs. I love it when there are so many ideas!!

Windows quilting detail

The book includes my “no-mark” method of machine quilting. It’s all about the texture!

Quilt It

I recommend using a blending 50 weight Aurifil cotton thread with simple quilting for busy fabrics and save the “fancy” quilting for areas of the quilt where it will show. With my detailed diagrams and quilting plan, you’ll be able to quilt  the blocks continuously, with only one start and stop for each row!

More Windows inspiration

Think about other ways you can make Windows – what if you reversed the colors, or made it from solids, or chose a scrappy background? Clink the links below for even more ideas and be on the lookout for some bonus giveaways!!

Suzy Webster – Webster Quilt

Detail of Windows quilting by Suzy

Check out this scrumptious quilting by Suzy Webster. I love how she chose a solid red so that the quilting really shows up in the background. And look how she used “switchbacks” in both the frames and the border. It’s one of my go-to designs that I first introduced in my first book Machine Quilting with Style.

Head over to Suzy’s blog to read more about the making of her quilt and to see her final reveal! She’s hanging her quilt in a place I’d never thought of before, but it sure looks great!

Katie Joy Church – Wild Prairie Studio

Windows quilt in progress

You’ll be jealous when you see Katie’s studio view as she worked on her version of Windows. She’s also thrown in a few inspiration images and other eye candy. You’ll be able to see how large the quilt is when you see it in progress on a bed in a cabin by the sea – which is just lovely!

Be sure to visit her blog too see how she plans to finish.

Terri Vanden Bosch – Meanderings Along Lizard Creek

Windows Table Runner

Look at this beautifully styled photo from Terri. It’s so easy to make the quilts in my book smaller or larger simply be sewing more or fewer blocks. Her soothing color palette is perfect for this pretty room.

Check out more about Terri’s quilt-making process plus more beautiful photos on her blog. She even told me her husband said it looked like “windows” before he even knew the name of the design!

Today’s Gift – Win Goodies from American Patchwork and Quilting

My friends over at American Patchwork and Quilting have been so supportive of my work! I’ve been in their magazines a few times and I’m always inspired by what they have to offer. Plus here’s a fun fact: I discovered modern quilting back in 2012 when I saw a modern quilt in one of the summer issues of American Patchwork and Quilting. I was so excited that I stopped everything to find out more about modern quilting and it totally changed my career path (for the better!!)

American Patchwork and Quilting Giveaway

Today, they are offering up a nice prize pack – a copy of Better Homes and Gardens’ Complete Guide to Quilting, 3 of their latest magazine issues (notice a familiar quilt on the cover of American Patchwork and Quilting? Yep – that’s mine), plus 4 adorable quilting charms (not pictured.)

Due to shipping costs, this one will be open to US residents only. To enter, leave a comment on this post telling me how many magazines you subscribe to. (If you want to answer honestly, that’s totally up to you. I promise I won’t judge, LOL!!)

All Peopl Quilt

More inspiration will be given to one lucky winner at the end of the hop!

Truthfully, I rarely make an quilts from magazine patterns since I’m usually designing my own, but I love flipping through their pages for color and layout inspiration. I especially love reading technique articles, plus what’s happening in the quilty world. I’ll choose a winner the morning of Aug 31, the last day of the hop!!

I have switched to e magazines, I currently receive 4. I can download the patterns I like. Storage became an issue when I downsized my home. That beautiful cover quilt is one the list, scrap quilts are my favorite.

I don’t subscribe to any magazines anymore only because they were arriving damaged. I regularly purchase APQ and Quilts and More, plus a few of the British magazines. I love them for all the eye candy and inspiration!

I don’t subscribe to any at this time. I need to! But can’t keep up with the books I have 😉

I subscribe to 4 magazines and I enjoy getting them each month. I’ve enjoyed seeing the different color combinations of your quilts.

I subscribe to one quilting magazine. I strongly prefer the actual magazines over the electronic ones.

Awesome giveaway. I think I am currently getting 5 quilting magazines, but my mom subscribes me to a couple other non-quilting mags as Christmas gifts…do those count? Your blog hop has been fun, and full of inspiration. Thanks!!

Subscribe to 4-one printed and 3 online. No room for storage, so online saved to my laptop is wonderful.

Congratulations, Christa, on another winning pattern!
I’m afraid I had to let my subscriptions lapse this past year because of downsizing work… But as soon as I get re-situated, I hope to start up again… (Subscriptions are a good value, over buying the magazines one at a time… And I do enjoy having the paper magazine in my hands, rather than an emagazine online…)

I only subscribe to 1 quilting magazine and that’s part of a membership. I do like to buy individual issues of quilting magazines featuring an aspect of quilting that currently interests me. I would love to check out BHG quilting publications.

I currently subscribe to one, it was more but I needed to back off a little, with that said I am still picking up magazines in the stores.

I love looking at new quilt designs so I am guilty of having at least 4 different subscriptions coming to me. They give me inspiration and ideas I wouldn’t have thought of myself.

I get 4 magazines at present. Have let several lapse due to budget. Have found a lot of inspiration from different blogs. Great that some have free patterns and tutorials.

I love the quilts in this latest book, Christa! I just bought the kindle version and I can’t decide which one I want to make first, lol!

I love quilt magazines, whether I make the projects or not! I subscribe to five different quilt magazines.

I bought that American Quilting with your quilt on the cover off the rack. I only subscribe to two magazines but pick up other issues off the rack based on content, usually there’s a Christa quilt driving that decision. I also use your patterns & guidance from books (Modern Quilting, Ultimate Guide, & House Blocks), thanks for all the inspiration.

  16. Lynn Thornton says:

I don’t have any subscriptions right now but I like to buy ones from the bookstore that catch my eye or have a pattern that I think that I can do.

I don’t currently subscribe to any magazines, but that’s because I used to get way too many and finding a place to keep them was getting to be a real problem. But I don’t like digital mags at all….they are no substitute for the real thing, with all that beautiful glossy paper! So I occasionally will pick up a single copy when I just can’t stand it any longer!

I do not subscribe to any magazines. Occassionally I will pick up one at the store. Read lots on line

I’ve been thinking of subscribing to Modern Patchwork but I haven’t yet. I need to downsize soon and I’m hesitant to collect a bunch of magazines that I know I won’t be able to part with 🙂 Maybe a digital subscription..? I do subscribe to about 30 quilting blogs, though, and I love to read those! Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

  20. Claudia says:

I currently subscribe to 5 magazines and read every single one (have to admit, mostly photos and short articles or recipes) 🙂

I confess, I subscribe to 8 different magazine. I’m able to get several of them at half off the renewal price, so $8-$12 for a year of magazines is SO much less expensive than buying off the magazine rack. Like you, I love to look at the quits for inspiration. While I do make quilts based on magazine patterns, I seldom make them exactly as designed and enjoy redrafting them to be more of what I want. This also helps me understand the assembly process a little better.

I do not subscribe to any magazines. However I do tend to pick up 1-3 each month depending. I tend to stick to those with more modern images and patterns. Also more interested if it has a bag or some other pattern (s).

I don’t subscribe to any magazines. I did subscribe to one but let it lapse. I look at the magazines in the store and if there are two or more patterns that I like and think I might make, I pick it up.

I subscribe to two different magazines. MSQC’s Block and Modern Quilts, but, I buy some off the stand if the cover catches my eye. I had to buy a new 4 shelf bookshelf just to house them all. hehe

Right now I receive 3 magazines in the mail, but they will be running out at the beginning of next year. Not sure if I will be renewing.

  26. Hedy says:

Right now I only subscribe to just two magazines. Oh, I forgot Block so that makes it three. I keep all my magazines and reread them all the time.

  27. Katie Joy says:

I had to stop subscribing to magazines in an attempt to downsize my home. I was tucking away too many. But my new favorite is Quiltfolk. Expensive but the beautiful images are so inspiring. Thank you for sharing my version of your quilt today!! This was a lot of fun. I am going to be making more of the quilts in your book.

I subscribe to four Quilt magazines: American Patchwork and Quilting, McCalls Quilting, Quiltmaker and Block (Missouri Star). Love to see and think about all the amazing ideas.

On a different subject, five years ago I used your String of Pearls pattern to make a children’s art gallery Quilt. Only addition was to sash each drawing with an appropriate color.

I dont receive any magazines. I was getting one, Fons, my sister in law was subscribing and she got to send one to a friend so that was so much fun! I loved getting it in the mail. But she no longer subscribes to a magazine and i am on a very limited budget since i am on disability due to my illness. Got to pinch my pennies so i can play with my pretty fabrics! I pick one up in the stores as a treat to myself though occasionally.

  30. Kim says:

I subscribe to 3 different quilt magazines…I do jewelry and basketry so have some of those also. It gets to the point where I don’t have anywhere to store them all! Hate to part with any so I keep them just in case I need to look back at something.

I receive two quilt magazines (Fons & McCalls Quick Quilts). Love your book of fabulous quilt ideas for precuts.
