Sew and Tell – A Class with J. Michelle Watts

A few weeks ago, my traditional guild brought in guest speaker J. Michelle Watts to lecture and present a series of classes. I was fortunate enough to take a super fun day-long applique class with her.

20140601_michelle_1Quilting students watching J. Michelle Watts’ machine applique demo.

Michelle’s focus is on machine applique with a southwest theme and it was very interesting to me how many Southwest designs have a little bit of a geometric modern vibe to them.

20140601_michelle_2Some of Michelle’s beautiful class samples.

As any well prepared teacher would do, Michelle offered kits available for our class and many of the students took her up on that offer. The medallion piece was a great exercise to practice stitching angular shapes, sharp points, and tight curves.

20140601_michelle_3My friend Cory stitched her practice sample on a striking black background.

Of course, I had to go my own way and try something completely different! 🙂 I may not actually do anything with this piece, but it was fun to try out the teacher’s methods and pick up a few tips and tricks along the way.

20140601_michelle_4My version – it’s such fun to play!

No matter how much I think I know about a particular subject, I always learn something new whenever I take a class. The best tip I picked up from Michelle’s class was to use a dotted outline when tracing shapes for fusible applique. It’s much quicker than drawing the whole line!

20140601_michelle_5Drawing dotted lines rather than a full outline of the shape is much faster!

Thanks, Michelle, for a great day – and a fun class!

Riley Blake MQG Challenge Quilt Post #3 – The Finish

I have finished my entry for the Riley Blake/Modern Quilt Guild challenge.
It’s called Spiraling Out of Control and it finishes 70″ x 70″.

Modern Quilt

Spiraling out of Control by Christa Watson

I love the explosion of line and color against the charcoal background. The fabrics were fun to work with and I enjoyed every step of the quilting process. I quilted the background areas with “industrial” straight lines, and I quilted the rays of color with free-motion ziz-zags in matching colors of Aurifil 50 weight cotton thread.

Quilting Detail

Spiraling Quilting Detail

I tried several experiments while making this quilt which were fun to explore.

The block is very similar to an oversized string pieced block, yet all of the angles are wonky, and no two blocks are alike. The inclusion of background fabric between every other strip really helps the colors pop. I didn’t want to paper piece it or use foundations so I pieced them improvisationally, then used a ruler to square them up.

Improv Block

Trimming the Improv Blocks

It took me awhile to finalize the layout. Because of the movement of the blocks, there are a variety of designs that could be created. I had the toughest time deciding if I should contain the boxes formed by the rays or let them stick out on the edges. My gut said to go with “points out” as I call it rather than “points in.” I think that added to the “out of control” look and feel of the quilt!

I tried basting spray which I really liked. No pesky pins to remove while quilting! I also used Quilter’s Dream Orient batting for the first time and absolutely fell in love with it. It’s a mix of silk, bamboo, botanic tencel and cotton. The quilt is so soft even with a ton of quilting on it, and it drapes very nicely. I think this is my new favorite batting!

basting spray

Use basting spray outside or in a well ventilated area with open windows.
I sprayed the top and bottom of the quilt rather than the batting.

Another experiment I tried was quilting it entirely with my free-motion foot, including stitching in the ditch. While it was more work to push through the machine, I liked the freedom of movement and I didn’t get any of those puckers that often happen along intersecting seam lines.

Quilting Detail

Quilting Detail

I quilted the negative space with closely spaced lines using the edge of my foot as a guide. I didn’t mark any of the lines or worry about making them perfectly straight, which was also a nice experiment in letting go of perfection!

Loose Threads

Loose Threads to Tie Off Later

My next experiment, which was a little crazy, is that I tied off all of the starts and stops from the colored threads. (Not for the backgrounds though – I didn’t even want to go there!) I did this mostly to see if was an insane idea or not. While it took a long time and I thought I would hate it, it was actually very relaxing.

Aurifil Threads

Aurifil Thread Colors Used

I finished the quilting and left long tails of colored threads until the end. Then I used a needle and a thimble to basically hand quilt one stitch of every stop and start, made a knot and popped it into the batting so there wasn’t a mess of thread on the back. This gave me the chance handle the quilt quite a bit. I can now see the value of hand work, but only if you are not rushed! I also finished stitching the binding by hand.

spiraling_back

Quilting Detail on the Back

A final experiment is that I timed myself during every step of the process to see how long it would actually take from start to finish. People are always talking about how many weeks or months it takes to make a quilt, but that never makes sense to me because I don’t know how many hours a day they spend quilting. The number cruncher in me likes keeping track of these things!

Here’s a breakdown of the time:

  • Prewashing fabrics – 1.5 hours
  • Starching, pressing and cutting – 7 hours
  • Sewing the blocks – 14 hours
  • Starching and squaring the blocks – 1.5 hours
  • Deciding on layout of blocks – 2 hours
  • Sewing top (including pressing) – 3.5 hours
  • Piecing the back – .5 hour
  • Basting & smoothing – 2 hours
  • Stitching in the ditch – 1.5 hours
  • Quilting the negative space – 22.5 hours
  • Quilting the colored strips – 12 hours
  • Tying off knots – 6 hours
  • Sewing binding to the quilt – 3 hours
  • Finishing binding by hand – 5 hours

It took a whopping 82 hours to make this quilt! I guess you could say the time spent creating spiraled out of control. 🙂 However when comparing it to quilts where makers sometimes spend hundreds of hours on their competition pieces, I didn’t feel so bad. After all, it was an experiment!

Modern Quilt

Spiraling out of Control by Christa Watson

Final Stats:

  • Spiraling Out of Control – 70″ x 70″- designed, pieced and quilted by Christa Watson
  • Riley Blake Basics fabric in aqua, navy, yellow, orange and grey
  • Riley Blake Basics Charcoal Solid for the background, backing and binding
  • Aurifil 50 weight cotton thread for piecing and quilting, in colors to match
  • Quilter’s Dream Orient Batting
  • An insane 82 hours to create
  • A joy to make from start to finish!

Thanks to Riley Blake and the Modern Quilt Guild for hosting this challenge!

Why I Love Amazon Prime for Buying and Selling

I like to be pretty upfront and tell it like it is. So yes, this is an Amazon commercial. 🙂 But here’s why – Jason and I have recently become “Prime” merchants, so of course it’s in our best interest to spread the word about the benefits of Amazon Prime.

Amazon PrimeHere’s the Commercial Part:

Sign up for a free 30 day trial of Amazon Prime. It includes free US shipping for purchases made from Prime merchants, instant streaming of movies and TV shows, and instant access to Kindle titles. When Jason and I originally signed up ourselves a few years ago, I don’t think there was a free trial period,  so that’s an extra bonus now. 🙂

And the Why I’m Promoting It Part:

I love selling fabric and supplies and I’m always looking for new ways to spread the word. After having an online store for 10 years, I’m test-selling on Amazon to see if it will be successful. Here are some of the the items we have on there so far:

ThreadDr. Seuss BundleLaurel Burch Socks

Being a “prime” merchant means I take all of the products I’m selling and ship them straight to Amazon. Amazon stores everything in their warehouse and then ships the order directly to the customer so that it will arrive in 2 days. The customer gets free shipping, and Amazon makes me look good with excellent customer service, so it is a win-win.

However, there are two drawbacks to this model – it’s very expensive to sell this way and Amazon doesn’t ship worldwide.  But if it can help me increase my sales and reach more domestic customers then I’m willing to try it out.

Even if it Doesn’t Work for Us as Sellers

We are taking a big risk by moving so much inventory from our website to Amazon. However, even if it doesn’t work out, we are still happy to use Amazon Prime as buyers. For $79 a year, it more than makes up for any shipping costs we would normally incur on items we purchase, plus all the free streaming videos. (My children can’t stand to watch regular TV anymore because of all the commercials, LOL!)

Amazon PrimeWe wouldn’t have made the jump to sell on Amazon if we weren’t already comfortable shopping there since we know how it works from the other side.

So try out Amazon Prime free for a month and let me know what you think. If you end up buying anything from me while you’re there, that’s just the icing on the cake!

Christa’s Quilt Links – QuiltCon Edition

This is my last post about QuiltCon for the week. I think I blogged about it more days than I was there, LOL!

For today’s list of blog links to check out, I am going to share with you links to a few of the bloggers I met at QuiltCon. It was quite the fun friendship frenzy with everyone meeting up (many for the first time in person), swapping business cards and chatting. Enjoy the ride:

Carolyn Friedlander and Ellen Rushman

Carolyn Friedlander and Ellen Rushman

Carolyn Friedlander is a fabric designer for Robert Kaufman. Her project, The Local Quilt was one of the QuiltCon award winners. (I really need to get Architextures!)

Ellen Rushman presented the findings of her research study into Modern Quilting for her college thesis.  She basically confirmed what everyone has been saying – Modern Quilting is part aesthetics/part attitude.

Both of these creative women were a joy to meet!

Latifah Saafir

Latifah Saafir

Latifah Saafir is one of the board members of the Modern Quilt Guild.

She also moderated a lecture/panel discussion on how to get one’s work into magazines.

The info I gained in that one lecture was worth the entire trip to QuiltCon!

Heather Jones

Heather Jones

Heather Jones presented a lecture on Everyday Inspiration in Modern Quilts at QuiltCon. It was the first lecture I attended upon arriving and it really set the tone for the weekend.

She showed numerous beautiful examples of how she took pictures of the world around her and interpreted them into breathtaking graphic quilts.

I wish I had taken more pictures of her work, but fortunately her lecture and several others from the show are available for free on Craftsy – so check it out!

Vicki Anderson, Christa, Amy Gibson

Here I am, standing in between two lovely people, Vicki Anderson, CEO of Meander Publishing, and Amy Gibson from Stitchery Dickory Dock.

Vicki was part of a panel that talked about Publishing Your First Book, and Amy did the wonderful free Craftsy 2012 Block of the Month series.

I am surrounded by awesomeness!

Christa’s Quilt Links – QuiltCon Sneak Peek

I’ve put together a little Sneak Peek of a few quilts going to QuiltCon. I do a LOT of blog surfing for inspiration and by chance have come across quite a a few blogs whose quilts have been accepted into this show.

Think of this as a mini show for those of you that cannot attend in person. I think this is only natural since the whole Modern quilting movement essentially started online. It only makes sense that we should all share.

This post is long, but I wanted to show a large enough of picture of each quilt so you can enjoy their beauty. All pictures are re-posted with permission of each quiltmaker.

Be sure to visit each of these quilters’ blogs for some fantastic inspiration and and to learn a little bit more about each quilt. To think that my quilt will be hung with these lovelies is a humbling thought. I couldn’t ask for better company.

I am also super excited about all of the classes and lectures being offered at QuiltCon. I will be taking Angela Walters’ machine quilting class and I look forward to translating her long-arm quilting techniques into domestic machine quilting on my Bernina.

There are two lectures that I am most eager to attend; one is on preparing a book proposal and the other is discussing how to get one’s work into magazines. Since these are listed as part of my professional quilting goals, I will be all ears!

Every time I turn around, one of the awesome modern bloggers I follow has gotten one of her patterns published in a magazine or is writing her next book. If that’s not inspiration and encouragement I don’t know what is. 🙂

By the way, if any of you are going, here’s a link to my QuiltCon intro post with my picture. I’m pretty short (but feisty) so you can come on up to me in the halls or on the show floor and I’ll be glad to meet ya!

Christa’s Quilt Links – Valentine’s Edition

Since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, I thought I’d share a few links showing adorable valentine’s themed quilt projects and tutorials. All links and pictures are re-posted with permission. 🙂

Twisting Heart TutorialFirst we’ll start off with Connie from Free Motion by the River with her wonderful Twisting Heart Tutorial.

She made her design into a mini-quilt with lots of gorgeous quilting texture. She says it could easily be made into a pillow as well.

I love it!

Heart PouchNext, the lovely Jennifer from Ellison Lane Quilts has this adorable drawstring pouch tutorial complete with an appliqued heart on it.

By the way, Ellison Lane Quilts is sponsoring SewSouth – a modern sewing retreat in the south. Too bad that I am too far away in the west for this one. 😦

Patchwork Heart BlockMegan from Canoe Ridge Creations has created a patchwork heart block to share with you.

It’s made from 2 1/2 inch scrap squares in a variety of pretty pinks and reds.

I can see this as the center piece of a larger quilt, but it’s cute enough to stand on its own, too!

Heart PillowFor those of you that would like to add a touch of Valentine’s Day home decor, here’s a sophisticated, yet easy to make reverse applique heart pillow tutorial by Kati From The Blue Chair.

I love the subtle piecing and the linen background.

Finally, I will share the Love with you as I complete my Love Table Runner this weekend. This is part of a 3-step tutorial series that I started last month. My final reveal will be posted on Monday so be sure to watch for it!

Love Table Runner

Here’s hoping you can spread the (quilty) love next week and all year long!

Christa’s Quilt Links, QuiltCon Intro and More

I’m linking up to a couple of different posts today. Then I’ll tell you about more fun linkups at the end! Warning: this post is heavy on words and light on pictures! 🙂

The Modern Quilt Guild is hosting a linky party for those of us attending QuiltCon in just a couple of weeks.  It’s a fun way for us to share pictures of ourselves so we can recognize each other when we meet in person. I’m also introducing myself  for the Thinky Thursday linky party. Here are 5 things you may not know about me:

Here's Christa!

Here’s Christa!

1. I signed up to go to QuiltCon all by myself with no roommate or traveling buddy. No, I’m not a loner. It’s just when I first heard about QuiltCon in August, I had never met or talked to any modern quilters before so I didn’t know a soul. I just knew I had to go to QuiltCon and make some modern quilts. In the few months since, I have met many online friends through their blogs, gotten one of my quilts juried into QuiltCon and now officially consider myself a modern quilter!

2. I’ve been quilting since I was 20, (a year after I got married) but sometimes feel like I’m still a beginner. It took me about 10 years to figure out stippling and another 10 to finally give starching a try. But this is the year I make up for lost time, LOL!!

3. I turn 40 this year. I had to put that in there because sometimes I feel a little “sandwiched” in between the younger modern crowd, and the more experienced ‘quiltie ladies’ from my guild as I call them, (some old enough to be friends with my grandmother). But I love them all!

4. My husband and I work full-time from home running our online quilt shop.  We also homeschool our 3 kids. Yes, we get in each other’s way and step on toes quite a bit so it’s kind of a crazy lifestyle. But we are in charge, so we love it! (We both used to be accountants so we know that a hard day at home is better than a great day at the office!)

Hubby and Kids

Hubby and Kids

5. I hated writing papers in college but I love to blog about quilting! Ok, that one is sort of cheesy but what it really means is that sometimes I can be a little long-winded. That’s the beauty of written thoughts. I can write pages and pages of blog thoughts and then edit them down to one or two simple posts. And yes, this is the shortened edited version, LOL!!

So now that I’ve shared where I’m linking up, I wanted to include the following linky parties that I have come across in my blog travels.

They are all sewing and quilting related, and I can spend hours browsing through them and finding tons of inspiration. Just click the images to go that blog and enjoy!

Christa’s Quilt Links – Flickr Groups To Check Out

Ok, I know I’m hitting the flickr thing a little hard, but I’ve really become addicted. So for today’s version of my favorite quilt links,  I will be listing a bunch of different groups I’ve found, and invite you to check them out as well.

Of course, I need to start with my very own flickr group that I created a couple of weeks ago: Christa’s Quilt-Along. I’ve been pleased with the response and it’s been fun to see pictures that everyone’s been posting.

Two other flickr groups that I’m personally involved with are Pile O’ Fabric’s Skillbuilder Block of the Month and Quiet Play’s And Sew On Paper Pieced Block of the Month.

If you are into modern quilting like I am, you can check out these two groups: The Modern Quilt Guild and Fresh Modern Quilts.

A group I just recently was invited to join is Quilt as Desired. Their focus is on machine quilting so I was all over that one!

And of course, everyone and their buddy is jumping on the Scrappy Trip Along bandwagon, so that’s another fun one to check out.

These few groups are like just a drop in the bucket compared the hundreds of different quilt and sewing related sites, and the thousands of groups available on flickr. So browse around, have fun, and don’t forget to come back and tell me any other fun groups I should join!
