Here’s some great news for those of you who have been patiently waiting for the pattern for my quilt Spiraling Out of Control. It’s now available in the current issue of Modern Quilts Unlimited magazine (Fall, 2015).
Here’s a quick back-story of the quilt. I originally made it for the MQG/Riley Blake fabric challenge in 2014 and was thrilled when it was selected as one of the 10 finalists out of hundreds of quilts. It then went on to hang at AQS in July 2014 nd then at QuiltCon in 2015 where it caught the eye of the Modern Quilts Unlimited editors. (In fact, they also fell in love with another of my quilts at the show which will be patterned in a future issue, so be sure to subscribe!)
I used EQ7 to design Spiraling Out of Control.
Jason jokingly refers to this issue as “my” issue because in addition to featuring the pattern, they’ve also given my book a nice review, and I’m in an EQ ad, too!
Seeing reviews of my book in national magazines makes me giddy!

I’m working 4 different projects, a Christmas tree skirt, Jenny Beyer’s Moonglow, the Craftsy BOM, and a quilt for my son and daughter in law…..then in the queue are 2 baby quilts and a wedding quilt all due in June of next year.

I’m working on a disappearing 4patch variation. My son has a wonderful eyes for color and balance and he picked out colors for me to make him. he picked out the batiks to go with the silver on black map-patterned fabric. He said he wanted batiks that looked more like earth floors. When I stacked the fabrics up. I thought Oh No! Such a dark drab mix. But once I cut the fabric and made up the first 20 blocks, I see he was right. Contrast is there and it will be a masculine sophisticated quilt. Really excited to complete it. Then a promised baby quilt and then ready for something like this beautiful spiral quilt. I love your work, Christa.

I am working on Tula Pink’s 100 Modern quilt blocks (doing 40 for a quilt), little improv trees (From Diary of a Quilter) and a Amanda Jean Nyberg’s cute striped trees pattern. Seem to be stuck on trees right now. Congrats on the quilt!

Congratulations on your magazine feature! Very exciting! I’m working to finish the quilting on a top that was pieced at last year’s quilt retreat given by my local quilt shop. I’d love to show it off at this year’s retreat so must finish before the end of Jan! Also making coasters Christmas presents. Keep up the good work Christa!
Great job on the big feature! I have 11 items on my WIP list- I had to write them down so I could prioritize! Among them are the 1920’s Farmer’s Wife, the QAL for 1930’s Farmer’s Wife, and a quilt from Sweetwater Varsity for my son.

Congratulations, it is a gorgeous quilt! Any tips on designing improv quilts in EQ7? I just finished the last quilt for City&Guilds, now I’ll be finishing up my “improv good wishes” and finish the quilting on a few other quilts.
I am just finishing a table runner for Christmas. Then I have high hopes of getting a Christmas Tree Skirt all made (from start to finish) before it is time to put up the Christmas Tree and decorate it.
I am working on a quilt for the Kumquat festival in Florida. Need to plan the borders, and plan how to free motion quilt it…. Big challenge for me!

Nothing like seeing your name in print! Congratulations. My machine went to the shop for repair yesterday. I feel lost. I was machine quilting a runner for Thanksgiving. Hopefully the machine will be back sooner than expected, they told me two weeks!

I am working on a memory quilt for the caregiver of my eldest sister, who passed away earlier this year. The fabrics and colors are nothing at all like I would usually use in making a quilt, but they are all ones that my sister loved. For this reason, the project is dear to my heart.
One of my current projects is reading your book (Machine Quilting With Style) from cover to cover. I hope to absorb enough to attempt quilting the many tops I have waiting to be transformed.
I am working on a charity quilt for the children’s ward at my local hospital. The design is Scrappy Summer by CluckCluckSew, and it will be a wonderful, scrappy quilt when it is finished!

I have a quilt top that someone gave me of baskets, I’m guessing it’s about 20 to 30 years old,I’ve made a back for it, but I keep looking at it to decide how to quilt it and am getting some ideas. I am making a disappearing pinwheel quilt it’s a Missouri Star pattern from YouTube, and pillow cases for my grandchildren
I’m working – even if not actively all the time – on quite a few projects! Most urgently, I’ve just started a wall hanging for a show at our local Community Arts Center which has to be ready by Christmas. I was invited to submit a piece for this show, which is called New in the New Year, and it has to be a new piece, so I had to go to work on something new. It involves circles, lots of solids and some black and whites. That’s all I know so far! I rarely do wall hangings, but I was honored to be invited to submit a piece, so I couldn’t say no. And I’m enjoying the challenge.
I’m testing a block for a quilter’s new pattern. I’ve never done this before so I’m a little worried that my skills won’t be enough but I’m also excited because I know I can do this! Congratulations on your quilt being featured in this magazine!
May I ask how you got to be a pattern tester? I would love to do that!
