I am slowly but surely making progress quilting my Bungle Jungle quilt. This is my first attempt at a modern quilt. I discovered the whole modern quilting movement just a few months ago and have truly been smitten!
I started with just one Bungle Jungle charm pack and surrounded the charms with lots of “negative” space so I could practice my free-motion quilting skills. I used Kona Cotton Solids in white for the background.
I love how the pebbling turned out and I’m now learning how to quilt some swirling vines. My vines look a little more like hooks, but it’s still fun to vary the motifs.
I like the textural element that quilting gives to a quilt!
At first I thought I would surround the little hands entirely with just one quilting motif, little curlie-cue’s.
However, after I quilted a few squares, that got old very quickly!
So to keep things fun, I’m switching quilting motifs throughout the quilt. Not only will every charm square be quilted differently, the background fills will change, too.
I’ve only finished about 4 rows of quilting so far (out of 15!) but I am enjoying the process. The key is not to rush it. I only quilt a couple of squares per day. This gives me daily FQM practice so I won’t get bored. This will be a long-term process and I won’t even attempt to record how many hours the quilting takes. But I am having fun and that’s what’s important!
I think I will call this quilt “Busy Hands” not only for the cute little quilted hands, but because I am keeping my hands quite busy quilting this baby!
I love how you quilted these pebbles. Can you tell me how you did this on your machine or a give a link that shows how this is done. New guy guilter here that is also smitten with jelly rolls and the modern quilting movement. Great job!!
The first thing to do when FMQ is to doodle and draw out the design with a paper and pencil. This gets your brain in the mindset of how the design works. Once you can “doodle” pebbles, then you replace the pencil and paper with fabric and thread. Holy cow! That is some incredible quilting. What a fun idea–the handprints stand out so nicely!
Love your quilt – it is soooooooo beautifull
Love the little Hands and your quilting. Is beautiful!
What a wonderful quilt! I have to admit I am drooling over it in envy! Really great job.
Wow! what a great job you are doing! I am inspired, I have not quilted any of my quilts that I have sewn, I am having a hard time deciding what design to go with (and the fact that I have never done it before is a bit daunting). I can’t wait to see your finished quilt, it will be awesome!
Excellent! Love the little hands!
Just adorable! You add a whole new level of awesomeness with this quilting. And there is no matter how long it takes, it’s so beautiful. Keep enjoying the process of quilting and keep sharing it with us!:) Well done!
Your quilting is awesome. It’s incredible how the quilting gives blocks 100% more personality.
Hmm….young grandmas and moms….maybe try their little footprints, too! It would probably look adorable to have foot prints walking around a quilt, or its border.
Christa, I love it~ A new gramma myself, one is 2 today, and the other is 1 next week! What a fantastic quilting idea! See something like this in their future! Thanks for sharing, you have inspired me~ now back to UFO’s because I want to start something new 🙂
I absolutely love the hand prints. My two year old granddaughter is coming to be with me for a few days. I have to steal (borrow, with your permission) your idea. I love it. Your quilt is beautiful and so very unique!
Emma – It would be super cute to trace her hand print and use that as your quilting stencil 🙂
VEry cute project!
wow, it looks great!!
